The first Tuesday after Thanksgiving Day has been designated "Giving Tuesday". The first of its kind it has been launched with the hope of becoming a national event and official opening day of the "giving season" "Charities, families, businesses and individuals are coming together to transform the way people think about, talk about and participate in the giving season". And as stated in The Washington Post, "charitable organizations across the country are
hosting volunteer, social media and cyber-giving drives to encourage Americans to give to their favorite causes during the holidays". It is said that "more than a third of all charitable donations occur in the last three months of the year".
